A guest post by my husband, Ed Nicholson

We had an absolutely arctic day here in January. The temperatures got down below zero and ice began to form on the insides of our old windows.  Elizabeth is not one to miss a photo-op.

These crystals are beautiful to look at, but I got to thinking about how hard it can sometimes be to keep ourselves unspotted from the world. The worries of this life can, like an oppressive chill, press in on us and threaten to find a way in. Some days it’s hard to let the light shine. It can feel like the darkness is winning. We fear our hearts are growing cold.

Still, greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. Martin Luther’s hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God is the hymn I thought of when seeing these pictures. God is able to protect what we have entrusted to Him.  And if we crack under the weight of temptation, He is able to wash us clean when we confess and repent. He is purifying for Himself a bride without spot or wrinkle.

Help me, Lord, to remember to find shelter – and warmth – under the shadow of your wings. You are never failing! Amen.

Can you believe how magnificent these snowflakes are?  Why would God make something so complex that is only temporary?  Some snowfalls don’t even last a day.   Yet God still creates these intricate, beautiful snow flakes.

Thank you, God of the universe, for creating this amazing beauty all around us.
And forgive me for missing it all too often.

Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.”~ Revelation 4:11 NASB

This was the perfect type of snowfall and it beckoned me to come and be a part of it.  The light would soon be fading.  Snow blanketed the ground and sounds were muffled.  I watched as the big fluffly flakes rapidly fell and tumbled over each other.

And God made these amazing crystal structures for you and me.  Everything He has created for us is so simple and so complex at the same time.  God became flesh.  Simply man and yet completely, complexly God.

I stayed out until it was dark, feeling warmed by His love and generosity.

John 1:3 – All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.
