Want of Wonder

“We are perishing for want of wonder,
not for want of wonders.”

~G.K. Chesterton

While researching the other day, I came across this Chesterton quote.  I had to reread it a couple of times to really let it soak in.  Chesterton was an English writer and theologian at the turn of the twentieth century.  I’ve not read any Chesterton and I see him appearing in the future on my What I’m Reading series.

In this hurry-up-and-achieve-it world, I feel that we have lost our “want of wonder.”  We rarely slow down and “smell the roses,” let alone sit and study the rose.

What can you see if you sit and wonder at a rose?  The scent, the depth of color, the intricacy of the petals, the curl of the stamen, and so much more!

Or what if you sit in your living room and wonder at the light in the room, the sounds in the house, the texture of the fabric of the chair you’re in?

We can even get industrial and digital.  Is there wonder in your laptop?  The weight of it in your lap, the smoothness of the case, the contrast between the surface and the keys, the many gifts that had to come together to create the digital world.

Wonder is there!  We just have to stop and find it.

What do you think of this quote?  What can you find today to wonder at?
