Introducing Blogging Through Omnibus III

I am a book girl! I love libraries and book stores. I firmly believe that there is no such thing as too many books. Friends regularly post book related memes on my facebook page. However, over the years, I’ve let too much technology creep into my life. Hours I used to spend reading have been spent with facebook and netflix. I can almost feel my brain becoming flabby. So this school year, I decided to do something about it.

We’ve been using Veritas Press’s self-paced Omnibus courses in our homeschool for the past two years. It is a classical curriculum that meets all of my educational goals for our homeschool very nicely! This year, I decided to read the book list ahead of my son so that we could fully discuss the literature. I started filling pages with quotes from the books. Quotes that touched me, spoke to me, or warned me. The “Blogging Through Omnibus III” series was born. I’ll still be posting recipes and photography. My hope is that reading more will cause me to write more.

I hope you’ll join me on this endeavor. There’s beauty to be observed in “The Great Conversation!”

You can see some of the books I’ll be starting with here.

What I’m Reading in September

It’s fall and that generally means more time to read…at least in our household.  There’s nothing like curling up with a warm drink, a comfy blanket, and a good book.  Here’s what I’m reading in September:

Prayer on Fire by Fred Hartley  I’ve been reading this book for a couple of months because it is the book our small group is reading.  I only read a chapter every two weeks.  Lots of good jewels in this one!

Discipline by Elisabeth Elliot I haven’t read a book by Elisabeth Elliot since I was in high school.  Since my word for this school year is “focus,” I thought this book would help me!  Expect to see some posts in the future from this book.

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan

The New Foxe’s Book of Martyrs by John Foxe  This is a hard book to read, not because of the level of difficulty in the literature, but because of the subject matter.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley I feel like the appearance of this book on my list is the answer to the question “Which of these books doesn’t belong?”  It is part of my son’s home school curriculum.  Even though I’ve assigned it before, I’ve never read it.  No time like the present!

Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford  Pretty apropos for fall, don’t you think?

The Confessions of Faith and Catechisms by The Orthodox Presbyterian Church  While I’m not Presbyterian, I am finding this book very helpful.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen  One of my favorite books!

The Word That is Navigating My School Year

My two youngest kids will be starting 9th grade today.  I have only four years left with the day-to-day teaching of parenthood and home education.  After the last year we’ve had, I feel so strongly that the Lord is whispering to me “focus.”  I want to finish this calling well.  Now is not the time to let things slack.  I need to gather every ounce of my gifts and abilities and put them towards this last leg of the journey.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize?
Run in such a way as to get the prize.
I Corinthians 9:24

What that looks like:

  1. A schedule for every one of us during the school day.
  2. Every thing goes into my planner.  This helps me get done the important things instead of just wasting time.
  3. Just saying no to the phone.  I’m letting the answering machine catch the calls and will return them during my “phone” slot on my schedule/planner.
  4. Saying no to most activities/events/invitations that happen during the school day.
  5. A good menu plan to get me through the fall.
  6. A lesson plan book for each kid.  I can’t fit it all in one planner.  They are responsible for their own planner. (Yes, that is the correct link.)  This will be our third year of using these planners and they have worked well for us.
  7. Filtering everything through the word “focus.”  I started doing this at the end of the summer.  Host an MLM party?  Not part of my focus.  Sign-up for such-and-such class?  Not part of my focus.
  8. Most importantly, daily time in the Word!  Nothing brings more focus to my life than hearing from my Creator by spending time with Him!

What things do you do to improve your focus?  Comment below and let me know!

Have a beautiful day!
