3 Fun Books for Thanksgiving

Books are such an important part of our family culture.  I don’t think it was a mistake that Jesus came as the Word made flesh or that God wrote everything down for us in a Book.  I think we were created to read.

I have books for just about every holiday.  They are packed up safely with the holiday decorations until they can be savored next year.  My children are getting older and yet I still see them thumbing through their favorite childhood books.

These three books have stood the test of time in our family and are read over and over.  I will probably pass on our other Thanksgiving books, but these will be kept to be read to visiting children and future grandchildren.

Fun books for Thanksgiving Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav PilkeyTwas the NIght Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey  is a fun book.  Because it follows the “Twas the Night Before Christmas” poem, it is easy and enjoyable to read.  It does need to come with a warning, though.  There is a picture of an axe and discussion about what happens to turkeys on Thanksgiving Eve.  The children think up a solution and the turkeys have a very happy Thanksgiving.  (I don’t condone their solution.)

Fun Books for Thanksgiving A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve BuntingA Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting is heartwarming story about friendship.  The book contains beautiful and colorful illustrations.  Mr. Moose searches for a a real live turkey to make Mrs. Moose’s perfect Thanksgiving.  Along the way, his other dinner guests join the search.  Will Turkey enjoy this Thanksgiving?

Fun Thanksgiving Books An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving by Louisa May AlcottAn Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving by Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorites.  Farmer Bassett and his wife must leave all of the children at home while they rush to the side of Mrs. Bassett’s ailing mother.  The oldest daughter, Tilly, decides that she will  cook the Thanksgiving dinner.  Many funny mishaps and a run in with a bear (!) will have your kids giggling.   In the end, Farmer Bassett, Mrs. Bassett, her mother, and many other relatives return to enjoy a “nice” Thanksgiving dinner and family togetherness.  I think the illustrations really add to the story, but if you can’t find this book, many versions of Alcott’s story can be found for free on the internet.

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving books or stories?

Glad you are back to blogging again. I hope you have been able to deal with your challenges so your life isn’t like an upside down laundry basket! That was a very picturesque way of putting it! Blessings to you and your family, especially your mom! Patsy from HeARTworks
