Why St. Patrick’s Day is Special to Me

Dr. Seuss Quote You know you're in love...

Twenty-seven years ago, I was a senior in high school.  And. I. Was. In. Love!

Ed and I had been dating for several months and had started to talk about marriage.  Because we were still in high school, it was decided that he would ask his parents if we could get married. The morning after the big talk,  Ed met me between classes under the stairs in one of the hallways.  It just happened to be St. Patrick’s Day.  When he saw me, he burst out, “So how do you feel about getting married?“  And that was that!  After happily embracing and exchanging forbidden-at-school-kisses, we returned to our classes.  We were married three months after we graduated from high school.  Three years later, our oldest daughter was born.

I absolutely love our engagement story.  It’s quirky and impatient.  He didn’t even have the ring yet!  Ed and I were so young and so happy!   There are certain members of our family who still good naturedly roll their eyes at our “sickening sweet” affection for each other.

Even back then, the foundation of our marriage was based on our individual and mutual relationships with the Lord.  We are grateful for the time and the many blessings He has given to us.  To this day, I can’t look at a picture of a newly married couple without smiling and remembering our early days with great fondness.

So, St. Patrick’s Day is special to me, but not for the same reasons as it is to the Irish.  For me, it is a day to look back and reflect on the beautiful memories that I share with my very best friend.

I love hearing about how couples met and planned for their married lives together. Care to share?

What a beautiful love story! I met my husband while we were both serving as youth leaders in our church youth group. Our Pastor’s wife sort of set us up. We had our first date in October and by Christmas Eve we were engage! Yes, just 10 weeks after we met. We were married 10 months later and have been married 26 years this August. We seen our fair share of hardship, but we are still so in love.

Dear Elizabeth, I loved reading your sweet Love Story! We all have one, but sometimes we forget how wonderful and special those beginning years were. When my Hubby and I first saw each other we felt the pull of the Holy Spirit, and we just walked His plan out! We are still very much in love…
Yours, and Happy St. Patricks Day to you both! Roxy

      Roxy,

I actually was inspired by your post about early marriage.

This is so special “We felt the pull of the Holy Spirit, and we just walked His plan out!”

It is so encouraging to see couples who are still very much in love.

Thank you for sharing your story!

      Blessings,
      Elizabeth

Thanks, Brittany! Yes, we were both 18. We are still very happily married and pretty much crazy about each other!
